最高人民法院（Supreme People's Court）發聲前，湖南省省會長沙警方通報稱，12日，湖南省高級人民法院高級法官（senior judge）周春梅（45歲）在該市一個地下停車場（underground parking lot）遇害。
警方進行的初步調查（preliminary investigation）顯示，嫌疑人（suspect）向某因事向法院提起訴訟（filed a lawsuit to her court），請周春梅為其“打招呼”被拒而心生怨恨、行兇報復。
向某已被警方拘留（detained by police），案件正在進一步調查中（under further investigation）。
除最高法院外，最高人民檢察院和中共中央政法委也在社交媒體賬號上發聲，對殺害法官的犯罪行為（the criminal act of killing the judge）表示極大憤慨（expressed great indignation）和強烈譴責（strongly condemned）。
最高人民檢察院表示，任何試圖通過暴力傷害恐嚇（violence and intimidation）來迫使我們低頭屈服（force the judicial authorities to surrender and submit to such crime）的行為都不會奏效，反而會使我們更加堅定打擊犯罪的決心（more determined to fight crimes）。
中國一直在不斷完善有關司法人員保護（the protection of judicial personnel）的法律法規。
根據2016年司法機關發佈的規定，對干擾阻礙司法活動（interferes with or obstructs any judicial activity），威脅、暴力傷害司法人員及其近親屬的行為（threatening or committing violence toward any judicial staff or any of their close relatives），要依法迅速從嚴懲處（be subject to serious punishment）。
最高法也加大了保護司法人員的力度。
2017年出台的新規規定，法官及其近親屬（udges and their close relatives）在庭內外均受到保護，嚴禁重大刑事案件（serious criminal cases）特定涉案人員接觸法官。
中政委表示，周春梅遇害案提醒司法機關，必須拉長法律的手臂，嚴格執行保護法官的規定（strictly implement regulations protecting judges）。
周春梅2003年研究生畢業後（earn her master's degree）進入湖南高院，從此開始她的法律生涯（legal career）。據湖南省高級人民法院介紹，參加法院工作17年來，她不徇私情，嚴格公正司法（firmly upheld the law），拒絕人情干擾，堅守法律信仰，勤勉敬業（diligent and dedicated）。
